According to ancient Christian tradition, St. Thomas arrived on the Malabar Coast around AD 52, becoming one of the earliest missionaries to bring Christianity to India. His mission took him across southern India, where he preached the Gospel, established Christian communities and inspired countless people through his witness to Christ.

His final years were spent in Mylapore, present-day Chennai. Tradition holds that St. Thomas was martyred on nearby St. Thomas Mount and was later buried in Mylapore. Over time, his tomb became a cherished place of prayer, attracting believers from different parts of the world who wished to honour the Apostle whose unwavering faith transformed the course of Christianity in India.

A Basilica Built Over a Sacred Tomb

Santhome Basilica occupies a place of immense significance in the Christian world. It is among the rare churches built directly over the tomb of an Apostle, alongside renowned pilgrimage sites such as St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City.

The original shrine over St Thomas' tomb dates back many centuries. In the 16th century, the Portuguese built a church at the site, recognising its importance as a place of pilgrimage. The present Neo-Gothic basilica, with its striking white façade and elegant central spire, was constructed by the British in 1896.

In 1956, Pope Pius XII elevated it to the status of a Minor Basilica, further affirming its importance to the universal Church.
