Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe: The Shrine That Draws 20 Million Pilgrims Each Year

Mexico, July 19, 2026: Located at the foot of Tepeyac Hill in Mexico City, the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe is one of the most important Catholic pilgrimage sites in the world. Every year, more than 20 million pilgrims visit this sacred shrine, making it one of the most visited churches globally. The basilica is dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Patroness of the Americas and a powerful symbol of faith, hope, and unity for millions of Catholics.

The Miraculous Apparition

The shrine's history dates back to 1531, when the Blessed Virgin Mary is believed to have appeared to St Juan Diego, an indigenous convert to Christianity, on Tepeyac Hill. During her final apparition, she instructed Juan Diego to gather roses in his tilma (cloak) and present them to the local bishop as proof of her request to build a church on the site.

When Juan Diego unfolded his tilma before the bishop, the roses fell to the ground, revealing a miraculous image of the Virgin Mary imprinted on the fabric. This image, known as the Tilma of St. Juan Diego, has remained remarkably preserved for nearly five centuries and continues to inspire devotion among the faithful.

A Remarkable Basilica

The current New Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, completed in 1976, was designed to accommodate the millions of pilgrims who visit each year. Its modern circular design allows worshippers to view the miraculous tilma from almost every part of the church.

The original Old Basilica, built in the 17th century, still stands nearby as an important historical landmark. Together, the two basilicas, along with several chapels and religious monuments, form one of the largest and most significant Catholic shrine complexes in the world.

The Miraculous Tilma

The tilma remains the heart of the sanctuary. Despite being made from cactus fibre—a material that would normally deteriorate within a few decades—it has survived for almost 500 years without significant decay. The image has been the subject of extensive scientific study, yet many aspects of its preservation continue to intrigue researchers and believers alike.

Displayed above the main altar, the tilma is viewed by millions of pilgrims each year, many of whom travel great distances to pray before this cherished image of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

A Living Legacy of Faith

Every year, especially on 12 December, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, millions of pilgrims journey to the basilica to honour the Mother of God. The shrine remains a powerful centre of evangelisation, Marian devotion, and cultural identity throughout the Americas.
