Khammam, April 3: Bishop Sagili Prakash of Khammam diocese, has called on the Supreme Court of India to review its stance on extending Scheduled Caste (SC) reservation benefits to Dalit Christians, arguing that their continued exclusion perpetuates social and economic disadvantage.
Speaking during the Good Friday gathering in Khammam, Bishop Prakash said constitutional guarantees under Articles 13, 14 and 25 ensure freedom of religion and equality before the law. He stressed that individuals who convert to Christianity do so voluntarily and should not lose access to affirmative action benefits tied to their historical social disadvantage.
The bishop criticised provisions under the Presidential Order of 1950, which restrict SC status to Dalits professing Hinduism, later extended to Sikhs and Buddhists but not to Christians or Muslims. He said this exclusion continues to deny Dalit Christians access to reservations in education and public employment.
“For generations, Dalits have faced systemic discrimination and untouchability. Denying reservation benefits further deepens their marginalisation,” Bp Prakash said, urging judicial reconsideration of the policy.
The remarks were made after the bishop flagged off a “Way of the Cross” procession that drew over 5,000 participants. Addressing the gathering at Ambedkar Centre, he also spoke about the broader message of peace and unity, invoking the idea of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, or the world as one family.
Bp Prakash added that he has previously raised the issue with senior political leaders, including prime ministers, presidents and members of parliament, highlighting what he described as the longstanding grievances of Dalit Christian communities.
The event also saw participation from several local religious and community leaders.
