Youth Leaders Confront Digital Stress and Mental Health in Shivamogga Initiative

Shivamogga, April 14, 2026: In a timely initiative addressing the growing mental health concerns among young people, youth leaders from Sacred Heart Cathedral gathered for a candid and reflective Mental Health Awareness Programme that emphasised balance, self-awareness and responsible digital engagement.

Hosted on April 12 at Shimoga Multipurpose Social Service Society (SMSSS) under its Chaitanya initiative, the programme created a safe and engaging space for dialogue on issues increasingly affecting youth in a digitally driven world.

Organised under the guidance of Fr. Stany D’Souza and Fr. Jostro, the session was led by Fr. Pius along with a trained counselling team. The facilitators addressed themes such as emotional stability, network addiction, and the broader spectrum of behavioural dependencies that impact the well-being of young people.

Thirteen youth leaders participated in the programme, which moved beyond conventional lectures to foster active engagement. Through guided self-assessment exercises, participants were encouraged to examine their own patterns of digital use, particularly the extent of their dependence on online networks.

A highlight of the session was a structured debate on the role of mobile phones in daily life. The discussion prompted critical reflection, with participants acknowledging that while digital devices are valuable tools for communication and learning, their excessive use can lead to addiction and negatively affect mental health.

The interactive format of the programme enabled open sharing and honest conversations, helping to break the silence often surrounding mental health struggles. By combining reflection with practical insights, the initiative underscored the importance of cultivating balance and resilience in the face of growing digital pressures.

Organisers and facilitators were appreciated for creating a meaningful platform for dialogue, while the youth leaders were commended for their enthusiastic participation, making the programme a reflective and impactful step towards promoting mental well-being within the Church community.
