Dimapur, April 11, 2026: The Salesian community and faithful across Northeast India mourned the passing of Father Job Kallarackal, a pioneering missionary who played a vital role in establishing Catholic missions in Arunachal Pradesh. He passed away at the age of 78 at the Referral Hospital, Dimapur, following a cardiac arrest.
The announcement of his demise was made by Father Joseph Pampackal, Salesian Provincial of Dimapur Province, who informed that Fr. Kallarackal breathed his last at 2:50 a.m. on April 11. Salesians and members of the Church remembered him as a man of courage, deep pastoral commitment, and a visionary dedicated to education and community transformation.
Father Job Kallarackal was among the earliest missionaries to enter Arunachal Pradesh at a time when Christianity faced significant restrictions. Through his tireless efforts, he helped establish schools, hostels, and village chapels, ensuring access to education and holistic development for tribal communities. His mission extended beyond evangelisation to include literacy, healthcare, and social uplift.
Recalling his contributions, Bishop P.K. George of Miao described him as a true pioneer whose courage and simplicity earned the trust of the people. His vision for education, the bishop noted, laid a strong foundation for the flourishing Catholic presence in the region today.
In addition to his missionary work, Father Kallarackal was widely known as a retreat preacher. His homilies and spiritual conferences, marked by depth and simplicity, resonated with priests, religious, and lay faithful alike. He conducted numerous retreats across Northeast India and abroad, leaving a lasting spiritual impact on many.
Father C.C. Jose Champarathy of Itanagar remembered him as a father figure to young people and a strong promoter of indigenous vocations. Many priests and religious, he noted, trace their calling to his encouragement and personal example.
Building the Arunachal Church
Father Kallarackal’s legacy endures through the institutions he established, the lives he touched, and the communities he helped nurture. His pioneering spirit continues to inspire ongoing missionary work in Arunachal Pradesh.
The growth of Catholicism in Arunachal Pradesh can be traced back to young people who encountered the faith while studying in Salesian institutions in neighboring states. Despite early prohibitions and challenges, the faith gradually spread through the dedication of missionaries and local believers.
From less than 1% of the population in 1971, Christianity in the state grew significantly, surpassing 30% by 2011, with current estimates placing it above 40%. The Roman Catholic Church remains the largest denomination, followed by strong Baptist communities, reflecting the enduring impact of early missionaries like Father Job Kallarackal.
