Capuchin Priest Jyoti Prakash Tigga Dies in Tragic Accident in Ranchi; Funeral on April 15

Ranchi, April 14, 2026: The Capuchin community is in mourning following the tragic death of Fr Jyoti Prakash Tigga, who passed away at the age of 45 after sustaining a fatal head injury in an accident on April 13.


According to an official communication from Br. Sumit Dungdung, the incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, where a new church building is under construction. Fr. Tigga had visited the site when he reportedly fell from a newly built balcony. He was immediately rushed to Sadar Hospital, but was declared dead on arrival.


Born in Suajore village under Harasmara Parish in Sundargarh district of Odisha, Fr. Tigga was known from his early years as a diligent and composed student. He completed his primary education in Telendihi and pursued his high school studies at New Orissa High School, Gaibira, where he was recognised for his academic ability and disciplined character.


In his religious life, Fr. Tigga served in the fields of education and formation, earning a reputation as a committed and dedicated member of the Capuchin Order. His untimely death has come as a profound shock to the friars, the local faithful, and all who knew him.


The Capuchin community has called for prayers for the repose of his soul and for strength and consolation for his grieving family and confreres during this difficult time.


The funeral Mass for Fr. Jyoti Prakash Tigga will be held on April 15 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, where fellow religious, clergy, and faithful are expected to gather to pay their final respects.
