Women’s Day Celebrated with Focus on Leadership and Empowerment in Belgaum

Belgaum, Karnataka, March 21, 2026 — Reaffirming its long-standing commitment to social transformation through women’s empowerment, the Belgaum Diocesan Social Service Society (BDSSS) marked International Women’s Day with a large gathering that highlighted leadership, dignity and inclusive development.

Held on March 14 at Sevalaya in Dharwad, the celebration brought together around 350 participants, including women leaders, social workers and community members from Alnavar, Dharwad and Khanapur project areas. The event underscored both the progress achieved in advancing women’s roles and the continuing need to strengthen gender equality at all levels of society.

For decades, BDSSS has worked among vulnerable communities, placing women at the centre of its mission. Through self-help groups, skill development programmes and leadership training, the organisation has enabled thousands of women to emerge as decision-makers within their families and neighbourhoods. These initiatives, organisers noted, have not only improved individual livelihoods but have also contributed to stronger local economies and more cohesive communities.

Dr. Derek Fernandes, President of BDSSS, who presided over the programme, emphasised the transformative role women play in society when provided with opportunities and support. He noted that the organisation’s sustained focus on women’s social and economic development remains integral to its vision of justice and human dignity.

Among the key speakers, Mrs. Geeta Ramesh Mahadevappanavar, President of DLRM and Jai Hanuman Foundation, highlighted that empowering women has far-reaching benefits that extend beyond households to the wider community. Sr. Sali D’Souza, Regional Head of Bethany Society, echoed this sentiment, stressing that authentic development cannot be achieved without women’s active leadership.

Dr. Vinod M. Muktedar, Honorary Deputy Superintendent of Police, Dharwad Rural, commended Christian organisations for their selfless contribution to nation-building, acknowledging in particular the formative role played by diocesan institutions in his own life.

Dr. Isabella Xavier, founder of Sadhana, addressed the gathering on the importance of safeguarding women’s rights and called attention to collaborative efforts between government agencies and civil society. Referring to initiatives of the Election Commission of India, she urged greater recognition of the positive impact created through such partnerships alongside grassroots organisations like BDSSS.

The programme featured cultural expressions, testimonies of women’s achievements and discussions on expanding women’s participation in decision-making processes. Participants engaged actively, reflecting a shared commitment to building more inclusive communities.

Concluding the celebration, organisers reiterated that the observance of International Women’s Day must go beyond symbolism. Instead, it should serve as a renewed call to action—one that recognises women not only as beneficiaries of development but as its primary architects.

With its continued focus on leadership formation and community engagement, BDSSS reaffirmed its resolve to foster a society rooted in equality, justice and respect for the dignity of every woman.
