Shivamogga Diocese Celebrates Chrism Mass and Day of Consecrated Life with Renewed Commitment

Shivamogga, March 20, 2026 — A spirit of unity, renewal and gratitude marked the celebration of the Chrism Mass and the Day of Consecrated Life in the Diocese of Shivamogga, as clergy and religious gathered at the Sacred Heart Cathedral on March 19, coinciding with the Solemnity of St. Joseph.

The Eucharistic celebration was presided over by Bishop Duming Dias, who was joined by Msgr Stany D’Souza, along with deans and priests from across the diocese. The gathering offered a visible sign of the unity of the presbyterium and the shared mission of the Church.

In his homily, Bishop Dias emphasised the centrality of the Eucharist and the indispensable role of priests in the life of the Church, urging them to remain steadfast in their vocation and committed to their pastoral responsibilities. His reflections set a tone of spiritual renewal for the clergy present.

A highlight of the liturgy was the blessing of the holy oils and the consecration of the Sacred Chrism, symbolising the Church’s sanctifying mission. The renewal of priestly promises formed a significant moment, as priests reaffirmed their commitment to ministry in the presence of the bishop and the faithful. Special prayers were also offered for priests, underscoring the deep spiritual bond between clergy and the community they serve.

The celebrations were preceded by a preparatory recollection held on March 18 at Sannidhi, where priests gathered for prayer and reflection. Fr Santan D’Souza led the session, guiding participants through moments of introspection and Eucharistic Adoration. The following morning included communal prayer, a spiritual conference and the Sacrament of Reconciliation, preparing the clergy for the solemn liturgy.

Later on March 19, the diocese also observed the Day of Consecrated Life at Sannidhi, bringing together priests and religious in a celebration that acknowledged the witness of consecrated persons. Jubilarians were honoured for their years of dedicated service, while Bishop Dias addressed the gathering with a message of encouragement and fidelity to vocation.

The combined observance highlighted not only the liturgical significance of the Chrism Mass but also the shared calling of priests and religious. The faithful were encouraged to continue supporting them through prayer, as the Church in Shivamogga renews its commitment to service, unity and mission.
