Ernakulam, July 6, 2026: Trade union leaders representing diverse ideological and political backgrounds have called for a united movement against the Labour Codes, alleging that several of their provisions undermine workers' rights.
The appeal was made during a discussion on "Impacts and Response to the Labour Codes", organised by the Unorganised Workers Trade Union Alliance (UTA) in Ernakulam.
The meeting brought together senior leaders from major trade union organisations, including former Member of Parliament and former HMS National President Thampan Thomas, former BMS National President Saji Narayanan, CITU State Secretary K. N. Gopinath, former Minister and AITUC General Secretary K. P. Rajendran, INTUC National Committee member V. P. George, HMS General Secretary Tommy Mathew and KLM President Jose Mathew.
Referring to the recent dismissal of workers at Corro Health, the speakers described the episode as an example of what they termed the adverse consequences of the Labour Codes. They urged the Kerala government to intervene to protect the affected workers and called on the Central Government to blacklist the company.
Addressing the gathering, Thampan Thomas said trade unions must rise above political differences and present a united front against the Labour Codes, which he argued weaken long-standing labour protections.
Saji Narayanan said the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) had already voiced its opposition to provisions it considers anti-worker and was prepared to join hands with other trade unions in seeking amendments to the legislation.
The meeting concluded with a call for greater coordination among trade unions to safeguard workers' rights and strengthen collective action against policies they believe are detrimental to labour interests.
