Life was difficult, and the family struggled with poverty.
When Maria was only nine years old, her father died of malaria, leaving her mother to care for the family.
Despite her young age, Maria willingly helped with household responsibilities, cared for her younger siblings, and remained deeply devoted to prayer.

Although Maria had little formal education, she possessed a remarkable love for God.
She attended Mass whenever possible, prayed the Rosary daily, and eagerly prepared to receive the sacraments.

Her simple but sincere faith became the foundation of her extraordinary witness.
On 5 July 1902, tragedy struck.
While Maria was alone sewing outside her home, a young neighbour named Alessandro Serenelli attempted to assault her.
Maria firmly resisted, choosing to defend both her dignity and her commitment to God.
Enraged by her refusal, Alessandro stabbed her fourteen times before fleeing.
Maria was rushed to the hospital in Nettuno, where doctors fought to save her life.
Despite her terrible injuries, she remained calm and prayerful.
Before her death, Maria was asked whether she forgave the man who had attacked her.
Her response has echoed throughout Christian history.
She said she forgave Alessandro and hoped that one day he would be with her in Heaven.
These final words revealed an extraordinary Christian love that reflected Christ's own forgiveness on the Cross.
Maria died on 6 July 1902 after receiving the Last Sacraments.
She was only eleven years old.
Perhaps one of the greatest miracles associated with Saint Maria Goretti was the conversion of her attacker.
Alessandro Serenelli was sentenced to thirty years in prison.
For several years he remained bitter and unrepentant.
Then one night he experienced a powerful dream in which Maria appeared to him, smiling as she offered him fourteen white lilies—one for each wound she had suffered.
The dream profoundly changed his heart.
He repented sincerely, returned to the Catholic faith, and lived the rest of his life in prayer and penance.
After his release from prison, Alessandro publicly asked Maria's mother, Assunta Goretti, for forgiveness.
She embraced him and replied that if Maria had forgiven him, she could do no less.
The two later received Holy Communion together, offering the world a remarkable witness of reconciliation.
Devotion to Maria Goretti spread rapidly throughout Italy and beyond.
She became a symbol of youthful holiness and Christian forgiveness.
On 24 June 1950, Pope Pius XII canonized Maria Goretti in Saint Peter's Square before one of the largest crowds ever assembled for a canonization.
Her mother, Assunta Goretti, attended the ceremony, becoming the first mother to witness the canonization of her own child.
Although Maria's life was brief, her witness continues to inspire millions of young Catholics.
