Tura, Meghalaya, July 05, 2026– In a heartfelt tribute to one of the region’s most revered religious leaders, the Meghalaya government has officially named a key stretch of road in Tura after the late Bishop George Mamalassery, recognising his profound contributions to the Catholic Church and the people of Garo Hills.
Cabinet Minister Marcuise N. Marak formally declared the road from Walbakgre Junction to Holy Cross Hospital as the “Bishop George Mamalassery Road” during a ceremony attended by the faithful at St. Luke’s Church in Walbakgre. The naming coincides with ongoing commemorations following the bishop’s passing.
Bishop George Mamalassery, who served as the Bishop of Tura and later as Bishop Emeritus, died on July 5, 2024, at the age of 92. Ordained in 1960, he was a pioneering figure often referred to as the “Engineer Bishop” for his hands-on role in infrastructure and institutional development across the diocese.
During his long tenure, Bishop Mamalassery played a foundational role in strengthening the Catholic presence in Meghalaya’s Garo Hills. He established numerous dispensaries, educational institutions, and invited religious orders such as the Salesians and Jesuits to set up colleges in Tura and Williamnagar. His efforts extended to healthcare and community welfare, leaving a lasting impact on both the Church and local society.
The late bishop was previously honoured with the Pa Togan Sangma Award by the Government of Meghalaya for his exceptional service. The road naming serves as another enduring symbol of gratitude for his lifelong dedication.
Local leaders and the Diocese of Tura have described the honour as a fitting recognition of Bishop Mamalassery’s legacy of compassion, leadership, and development. The newly named road, which connects significant landmarks including St. Luke’s Church and Holy Cross Hospital, will now perpetually commemorate his memory for future generations.
This tribute underscores the deep respect the people of Meghalaya hold for Bishop Mamalassery, whose missionary work and community service continue to inspire the region.
