Safeguarding Policy Orientation Strengthens Social Apostolate in Mysore Diocese

Mysuru, Jan 31, 2026: Reinforcing its commitment to the protection of vulnerable persons, the diocese of Mysore conducted an Orientation Programme on Safeguarding Policy for its Social Apostolate at the Catholic Centre, Mysuru, on January 30.

The programme brought together staff of the Office of Development Programmes (ODP), priests, religious, and lay collaborators engaged in social ministries across the diocese, reflecting an increasing focus on accountability, ethical conduct, and responsible ministry.

Organised by the ODP in collaboration with Caritas India and the Karnataka Regional Organisation for Social Service (KROSS), Bengaluru, the orientation aimed to deepen awareness of safeguarding obligations, particularly in ministries involving children, vulnerable adults, and marginalised communities. The initiative forms part of the diocese’s broader effort to integrate safeguarding principles into all aspects of its social outreach.

Addressing the participants, Bishop Francis Serrao, SJ, of Mysore underscored that safeguarding is not merely a procedural requirement but a core moral and pastoral responsibility of the Church. He called on all those involved in ministry to remain vigilant and committed to upholding the dignity, safety, and rights of every individual they serve.

The main session was led by Fr Francis Assisi Almeida, Regional Secretary of the Education Commission, who served as the resource person. His presentation covered the importance of safeguarding, key elements of the diocesan safeguarding policy, and the specific roles and responsibilities of ministry personnel. He also outlined preventive measures and clear protocols for reporting and response, highlighting both ethical imperatives and practical applications.

Designed as an interactive learning platform, the programme encouraged dialogue through case studies and group discussions. Participants shared field-level experiences and raised concerns, enabling the sessions to address real-life challenges encountered in social and educational ministries.

The orientation reaffirmed the diocese of Mysore’s resolve to foster safe, transparent, and accountable environments across its social and educational initiatives, placing protection, responsibility, and human dignity at the heart of its mission.
