Rourkela, Odisha, July 16, 2026: The Diocese of Rourkela has launched a one-year Certificate Course in Theology for the Laity, marking a significant initiative to strengthen the theological formation of lay Catholics and encourage their active participation in the Church's mission.
The programme, organised by Khristo Jyoti Institute of Theology (KJIT), Sambalpur, was inaugurated on July 13 at Sundargarh Parish with a Eucharistic celebration followed by an inaugural session.
Bishop Kishore Kumar Kujur of Rourkela presided over the inaugural Mass, concelebrated by Fr. Anuranjan Bilung, SVD, Provincial Superior of the INE Province, KJIT faculty members and diocesan priests. Around 50 lay faithful from Sundargarh Parish and neighbouring parishes, who have enrolled in the course, participated in the opening ceremony.
Declaring the academic year 2026–2027 open, Bishop Kujur encouraged the participants to deepen their understanding of the Catholic faith through systematic theological study and to apply their learning in their daily lives and ministries.
Fr. Anuranjan Bilung urged the participants to make full use of the opportunity to grow spiritually and intellectually, enabling them to become more effective collaborators in the Church's evangelising mission.
Speaking on the occasion, Fr. Victor Rodrigues, SVD, Rector of Khristo Jyoti Mahavidyaloyo, underscored the importance of theological education for lay faithful. He said a sound understanding of the faith equips lay Catholics to bear witness to Christ more effectively in their families, workplaces and society. He also thanked all those who contributed to organising the programme.
The inaugural session was compered by Fr. Imlus Tete, Director of KJIT. Among those present were Sr. Mary Kutty, Superior General of the Handmaids of Mary Congregation, and Sr. Emilia, the congregation's Vice General.
The one-year certificate programme will offer classes five days a week from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., providing participants with a comprehensive introduction to Catholic theology.
The initiative, coordinated by Fr. Emmanuel Toppo, SVD, Parish Priest of Sundargarh, reflects the Diocese of Rourkela's ongoing commitment to promoting lay formation and preparing the faithful for greater participation in the life and mission of the Church.
