Udupi, July 15, 2026: Doctors were recognised for their service and urged to uphold compassionate and responsible healthcare as the Health Commission of the diocese of Udupi organised the 2nd Diocesan Doctors' Meet and Doctors' Day celebration on July 12 at Ave Maria Hall, Mother of Sorrows Church, Udupi.
The gathering brought together doctors, Church leaders, healthcare professionals and government officials to honour the medical fraternity while reflecting on their role in strengthening community healthcare.
Hon'ble Karnataka Minister for Health and Family Welfare Sri U.T. Khader, the chief guest, was felicitated by Bishop Leslie Clifford D'Souza of Udupi. Addressing the gathering, Khader emphasised the importance of compassionate care and urged doctors to work with responsibility, noting that "many deaths are attributable to medical negligence rather than disease itself."
Dr. H.S. Ballal, Pro Chancellor of MAHE, highlighted the enduring legacy of Dr. B.C. Roy and the university's commitment to healthcare through the Arogya Card initiative, which ensures quality treatment for all, regardless of background.
Speaking on the evolving responsibilities of medical professionals, Dr. Jacintha D'Souza, Joint Director (Retd) of Health and Family Welfare Services, said doctors must extend their role beyond hospitals by actively engaging the public in health awareness and disease prevention.
The programme also marked the launch of several healthcare initiatives, including the 2027 Arogya Card campaign, a Dental Unit and a Diabetic Screening Centre at Goretti Hospital, along with the presentation of medical equipment to strengthen diabetic care services.
During the programme, Dr. Padmanabha Kamath, Founder of the CAD Foundation, donated two ECG machines to Immaculate Conception Hospital in Coimbatore. Sr. Sangeetha received the machines on behalf of the hospital from Emeritus Bishop Gerald Isaac Lobo.
Among those present were bishops, healthcare representatives and local leaders, reflecting the shared commitment of the Church and medical community towards accessible and quality healthcare.
The Doctors' Day celebration underscored the importance of collaboration between healthcare professionals, Church institutions and public authorities in promoting responsible medical care and expanding healthcare services for the community.
