Neglecting Duty Is Also Sin, Archbishop Machado Reminds Faithful at Nandgad Reparation Day

Belagavi, Karnataka, March 27, 2026 — A call to deeper responsibility in Christian life marked the annual “Diocesan Day of Reparation” of the Diocese of Belgaum, as Archbishop Peter Machado reminded the faithful that failing to fulfil one’s duties is also a sin.

The Lenten observance was held with solemn devotion at Holy Cross, Nandgad, a revered hilltop shrine known for its sacred and miraculous Cross. Thousands of pilgrims from Goa, Karnataka, and Maharashtra gathered for the day-long programme, popularly known among the faithful as the “Day of Reparation.”

The highlight of the celebration was a solemn Konkani Eucharist presided over by Archbishop Machado, former Bishop of Belgaum, and concelebrated by the current Bishop of Belgaum, Derek Fernandes, along with priests from neighbouring dioceses. Large numbers of devotees, particularly from Goa, arrived in buses and private vehicles, many offering their traditional Angvonn as a sign of devotion.

In his homily, Archbishop Machado reflected on the nature of sin and forgiveness, noting that while seeking pardon from God may come easily, asking forgiveness from one another often proves more challenging. He emphasised that the gathering was not only for personal repentance but also to seek mercy for the sins of others.

Drawing attention to global conflicts involving nations such as Israel, Iran, and the United States, the Archbishop said their repercussions are felt across the world, contributing to suffering and rising economic pressures. He urged the faithful to pray earnestly for both religious and political leaders.

Highlighting the Gospel call to service, he stressed that Christians are bound to recognise Christ in those who are hungry, thirsty, imprisoned, or in distress. “Neglecting these responsibilities is also sin,” he said, urging the faithful to examine their lives and seek forgiveness with sincerity.

The day’s observances began with the Way of the Cross along the hill, followed by Masses in English and Kannada. Several priests, including Fr. Nelson Pinto, Fr. Jude Felix, Fr. Vijay Mendith, Fr. Philip Kutty, Fr. Pramod Kumar and Fr. Joe Montero, participated in the liturgical celebrations.

The event was organised by the Nandgad Parish under the leadership of Parish Priest Fr. Shantappa Borkar, Assistant Parish Priest Fr. Peter Nazareth, Fr. Prashant, and the local faithful, ensuring a prayerful and well-coordinated celebration.
