New Delhi/Lucknow, March 27, 2026: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has appointed Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti as chairperson of the National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC), in a move widely viewed as part of its strategy to regain support among non-Yadav Other Backward Classes (OBCs), particularly ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
A former Union minister and two-time Member of Parliament, Jyoti belongs to the Nishad OBC community. Her appointment to the constitutional body, which safeguards the rights and welfare of socially and educationally backward classes, follows speculation about her possible elevation within the party.
Political observers say the decision reflects the BJP’s attempt to consolidate non-Yadav OBC voters after the party lost ground among these groups in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The opposition’s ‘Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak’ (PDA) plank is seen to have contributed to that shift.
Analysts note that the appointment combines Jyoti’s strong Hindutva image with her OBC identity, signalling a calibrated effort to counter caste-based opposition alliances. The move also aligns with the party’s broader strategy of blending Hindutva appeal with targeted social outreach.
Party leaders have praised her experience and commitment to public service, while political experts have compared her dual identity as a Hindutva leader and OBC representative to roles played by leaders such as Uma Bharti in earlier BJP strategies.
Jyoti, who hails from Hamirpur district in Uttar Pradesh, began her political journey with the Vishwa Hindu Parishad at a young age before joining the BJP. She later rose through the ranks, serving as MLA, MP and Union minister. Known for her polarising remarks, she has remained a prominent Hindutva voice since the Ram Mandir movement.
Despite losing her parliamentary seat in 2024, her appointment as NCBC chairperson signals her continued relevance in the BJP’s political calculus.
Experts suggest that by appointing a Nishad leader to the NCBC and elevating leaders from other OBC communities within the party, the BJP is sending a clear message of focused outreach to these groups in Uttar Pradesh.
The development underscores the party’s renewed emphasis on caste dynamics and social coalitions as it prepares for upcoming electoral contests, with non-Yadav OBCs emerging as a key target group.
