Basic Ecclesial Communities in India Embrace Synodal Path with New Training Initiative

Nagpur, November 5, 2024 (CCBI): The Basic Ecclesial Communities (BEC) in India are embracing a synodal approach that emphasizes deeper involvement of laypeople in Church life and decision-making. The new direction, rooted in Pope Francis’ vision of a collaborative, inclusive Church, encourages lay and clergy partnership in building participatory structures that bring all members into closer engagement.

To promote this shift, the CCBI Commission for BEC launched a month-long training programme at the Pallottine Animation Centre, Nagpur, aimed at priests, religious, and lay faithful who serve in diocesan and parish level BEC roles.

The course was inaugurated on November 5, 2024, by Bishop Ignatius Mascarenhas of Simla-Chandigarh. Rev. Dr. Stephen Alathara, Deputy Secretary General of the CCBI, delivered the keynote address, setting the stage for the programmes focus on synodal leadership.

The inaugural Holy Mass, led by Archbishop Elias Gonsalves of Nagpur. Rev. Dr. Christopher Vimalraj, Associate Deputy Secretary General of the CCBI, who spoke on how BECs are instrumental in implementing the CCBI’s Pastoral Plan for Synodality. This plan aims to build a "Church of the People," where the faithful are empowered to express their voices, share their talents, and take an active role in the life of the Church.

The training programme is animated by a roster of experienced resource persons, including Bishop Sylvester Ponnumuthan, Chairman of the CCBI BEC Commission and Bishop of Punalur, Bishop Sebastian Singaroyan, Bishop Emeritus of Salem, along with Dr. Jennifer Fernandes from Pune, Sr. Meena Dangwar, Ms. Jyotsna, Fr. Thomas Vijay and Fr George Jacob. Together, they are equipping participants to foster synodality within their local BECs through interactive sessions and practical workshops.

Through this approach, BECs in India aim to cultivate a Church that is vibrant, mission-driven, and rooted in communal discernment. By empowering lay leadership and encouraging active participation, the BECs seek to build a faith community that is inclusive, responsive, and more deeply attuned to the spiritual and pastoral needs of all.
