Rectors Meet Spotlights Compassionate Missionary Formation for Seminarians

Guwahati, November 6, 2024: The XXIII National General Body Meeting of the Association of Rectors of Major Seminaries (ARMS) convened at the Don Bosco Institute (DBI) in Guwahati, from November 4 to 8, focusing on the theme of missionary formation with compassion and cultural respect. Archbishop Emeritus Thomas Menamparambil of Guwahati delivered a keynote urging a renewed approach in seminarian training to form compassionate missionaries ready to engage in diverse societies.

 

The event began with an inaugural eucharistic celebration presided by Archbishop John Moolachira of Guwahati, joined by Bishop Varghese Chakkalakal of Calicut, the patron of ARMS. In his homily, Archbishop Moolachira emphasized the pivotal role of formators in guiding seminarians, encouraging them to embody God's compassionate heart and respond to human suffering.

 

Fr. Richard Britto, ARMS President, chaired the inaugural meeting, underscoring the Church's missionary call as central to its identity. Bishop Chakkalakal highlighted the pioneering missionary legacy in the Northeast, defined by resilience and transformative service.

 

In his keynote, "Re-envisioning Missionary Formation of Future Priests in a Pluralistic Society," Archbishop Menamparambil emphasized the importance of cultural sensitivity, stating that "successful missionaries appreciate culture as vital for faith communication." He advocated for outreach initiatives that foster friendships across diverse communities, especially in the Northeast and neighboring regions like Bhutan and Nepal.

 

The meeting also reviewed past progress, with Fr. Charles Leon, ARMS Secretary, updating the assembly on advancements since the previous gathering in Goa. Fr. Cletus, DBI Director, warmly welcomed delegates, showcasing the institute's offerings, while Fr. Antony Raj, ARMS Treasurer, extended gratitude to contributors.

 

With over 65 rectors from across India in attendance, the meeting concluded with a strong call for renewed dedication to the Church's mission. Fr. K. Marreddy, ARMS Vice President, ensured a smooth program flow, furthering the commitment of rectors to build missionary priests equipped to serve a diverse world.
