Cochin Diocese’s Memorial Mass Stands for Suicide Prevention

Kochi, November 6, 2024: In today’s rapidly moving world, mental health has emerged as a significant concern, with individuals from all backgrounds encountering diverse mental health challenges. The Diocese of Cochin held a memorial Mass on October at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church in Aroor to honor those lost to suicide and provide support for grieving families. Led by Fr. Chilton George Fernandez and Fr. Joshy Allesseril, with a homily by Fr. Martin Antony O.Dem, the event aimed to foster mental health awareness and encourage community involvement in suicide prevention.

This initiative was inspired by the Association of Catholic Mental Health Ministry’s first India Chapter, held earlier this year, and the Catholic Bishops Conference of India’s Healthcare Commission, both of which emphasize the importance of mental well-being within Catholic communities.

The Cochin Diocese’s Catholic Mental Health Ministry (CMHM), comprising 11 priests, collaborated with the Ashray Counseling Center and the Neuro Navigation and Trauma Therapy Institute (NNATTI) to organize the Mass. During the service, Fr. Antony highlighted a gospel story where Jesus weeps with Martha and Mary, later raising Lazarus, symbolizing hope and renewal even amid suffering. Parishioners offered flowers at the altar, representing God’s compassion and the community’s collective commitment to support mental health.

Following the Mass, CMHM members, including Fr. Ashbal, Fr. Jineesh, and Fr. Josmon, met with families to discuss upcoming mental health initiatives. The event moved 18 families, who expressed their willingness to support and participate in future suicide prevention efforts. Fr. Chilton George Fernandez, Director of Ashray Counseling Center, extended his gratitude to the CMHM India Commission and specifically thanked Fr. Shinto and Edwin Walker for their continued support in advancing this mission.
