Young Priests Urged to Root Ministry in Prayer and Pastoral Integrity

Eluru, February 27, 2026: Addressing the young clergy of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Eluru, Bishop Jaya Rao Polimera offered a reflective and challenging pastoral exhortation, calling them to deepen their prayer life and strengthen their commitment to responsible priestly service.

Speaking at the Young Clergy Meeting held as part of the diocese’s ongoing formation programme, the bishop reminded participants that the heart of priestly ministry lies in personal holiness and an intimate relationship with God. He urged every priest to set aside at least one hour each day for personal prayer, warning that without this spiritual discipline, ministry risks becoming routine and losing its evangelical vitality.

Drawing attention to the Eucharist as the source and summit of priestly life, Bishop Polimera stressed that personal communion with Christ sustains priests in moments of challenge and renews their joy and perseverance. He encouraged the clergy to allow the Eucharistic encounter to shape their attitudes, decisions, and pastoral priorities.

Reflecting on the ministry of the Word, the bishop emphasised that the pulpit must always be a place of hope, healing, and encouragement. He cautioned priests against expressing personal frustrations or anger in preaching, instead urging them to proclaim messages that build faith, promote unity, and strengthen the confidence of the faithful. Priests, he said, are called to be visible signs of peace and reconciliation in their parishes and neighbourhoods.

The bishop also highlighted the crucial role of catechesis, particularly for children and young people. Systematic and consistent faith formation, he noted, is essential for nurturing mature Christian discipleship and ensuring the continuity of the Church’s mission. Alongside spiritual and pastoral concerns, he reminded the clergy that good administration, financial transparency, and accountability are integral dimensions of priestly stewardship.

Concluding his address, Bishop Polimera expressed joy at meeting the young priests of the diocese and encouraged them to remain united in their vocation and generous in their service to God’s people. His message, rooted in pastoral wisdom and spiritual depth, served as a moment of renewal and guidance for the next generation of clergy serving the Church in Eluru.
