Vellore, Tamil Nadu, April 22, 2026: In a significant step towards strengthening the inner resilience of its clergy, the Diocese of Vellore organised a two-day ongoing formation programme focused on the psycho-spiritual health of priests, highlighting the growing need for balance amid the demands of pastoral ministry.
Held from April 20 to 21 at Sneha Deepam in Alamelarangapuram, the programme was centred on the theme, “Psycho-Spiritual Integration: From Burnout to Cherishing.” It brought together diocesan priests for a time of reflection, renewal, and deeper engagement with the emotional and spiritual challenges they encounter in their ministry.
The inaugural session was presided over by Bishop Ambrose of Vellore, along with Msgr. M. John Nicholas, Vicar General, and other diocesan officials. In his address, Bishop Ambrose underscored the importance of caring for both psychological and spiritual well-being, especially in the face of increasing pastoral responsibilities. He urged priests to view burnout not as a sign of failure but as an invitation to renewal, rooted in a deeper relationship with Christ. Emphasising that fruitful ministry flows from inner harmony and emotional maturity, he called the gathering a grace-filled opportunity for personal transformation.
The sessions were animated by Fr. S. S. Sahayaraj OFM Cap., who guided participants through processes of inner healing, self-awareness, and spiritual integration. His reflections enabled priests to recognise signs of burnout, engage more consciously with their emotional lives, and harmonise their psychological well-being with their spiritual vocation.
Participants engaged in reflective exercises, group discussions, and personal sharing, making use of the serene environment at Sneha Deepam to step away from routine pastoral duties and focus on renewal.
The programme concluded with a Eucharistic celebration on April 21. In his homily, Fr. Sahayaraj encouraged the clergy to remain firmly rooted in Christ, cultivate inner balance, and continue their pastoral mission with renewed zeal and compassion. He also commended the diocese for its timely initiative in addressing the holistic well-being of its priests.
The consistent presence of diocesan leadership throughout the programme highlighted the importance placed on ongoing formation and the care of clergy. The initiative reflects the Diocese of Vellore’s commitment to nurturing priests who are not only spiritually grounded but also emotionally resilient, recognising that effective pastoral ministry springs from a well-integrated and renewed inner life.
