Vailankanni Seminar Celebrates Vatican II Legacy and Calls Laity to Active Witness

Vailankanni, March 25, 2026 — A significant gathering of nearly 400 faithful from across Tamil Nadu at the Shrine Retreat Centre in Vailankanni underscored the enduring relevance of the Second Vatican Council and the vital role of the laity in the Church’s mission.

Organised by the Tamil Nadu Laity Commission, the state-level seminar brought together clergy and lay leaders for a threefold observance: a reflection on the mission of the laity, the diamond jubilee of the Second Vatican Council, and the announcement of Saint Devasahayam as the Patron Saint of the Laity in India.

Bishop Neethinathan of Chengalpattu noted that the seminar witnessed the highest participation in the Commission’s history, reflecting a growing interest among lay Catholics in deepening their engagement with the Church’s life and mission.

The inaugural session was presided over by Bishop Sahayaraj of Thanjavur, in the presence of Monsignor Irudayaraj and Father Sebastine. Father Maria Michael, in his keynote address, highlighted the significance of the threefold celebration, urging the faithful to draw inspiration from both the teachings of the Council and the witness of Saint Devasahayam.

An award ceremony formed a key highlight of the event, recognising 18 Catholics from various dioceses for their exemplary contributions across diverse fields, affirming the Church’s appreciation for lay leadership in society.

The seminar featured a series of thematic sessions focusing on the spirituality of Saint Devasahayam, the empowerment of the laity, and the transformative impact of the Second Vatican Council on the Church’s understanding of lay participation.

During the Holy Mass celebrated by Bishop Sahayaraj, a Tamil prayer card dedicated to Saint Devasahayam was released for distribution across dioceses, encouraging devotion and emulation of his witness.

In addition to spiritual formation, the seminar also engaged participants in discussions on public life, including the current political landscape in Tamil Nadu and the role of the Indian Constitution as a safeguard for justice and equality.

The gathering concluded with a call from the Regional Secretary for lay Catholics to become active witnesses in their communities. Copies of the documents of the Second Vatican Council were distributed to all participants, reinforcing the importance of an informed and mission-oriented laity in the life of the Church.
