Mumbai, March 25, 2026 — A solemn Eucharistic celebration marking Pro-Life Day was held at Mount Mary’s Basilica, where Auxiliary Bishop Steven Fernandes delivered a homily centred on the transforming power of the Annunciation and its enduring message for the Church’s pro-life mission.
Concelebrating the Eucharist were Fr Joshan Rodrigues, Editor of The Examiner, and Fr Vincent D'Cruz, President of the Indian Catechetical Association, along with other clergy. The liturgy was organised by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Bombay through its Human Life Committee in collaboration with pastoral teams engaged in family and catechetical ministry.
In his homily, Bishop Fernandes reflected on Mary’s “yes” to God’s will, describing it as a moment that altered the course of human history. Rooted in the mystery of the Incarnation, he emphasised that the beginning of life is intimately linked with God’s plan of salvation, urging the faithful to uphold and protect the dignity of every human life.
Drawing from Scripture, he contrasted the hesitation of King Ahaz in the Book of Isaiah with the prompt and trusting response of Mary in the Gospel of Luke. He highlighted her readiness to cooperate fully with God’s call, presenting her as a model of faith and surrender. “God invites, but does not impose,” he said, pointing to Mary’s free and generous response as an example for all believers.
The Bishop also underlined the humility of Mary and Saint Joseph, noting that their quiet obedience made possible the unfolding of God’s salvific plan. Such humility, he observed, remains essential for Christians committed to defending life in today’s world.
The celebration drew a diverse congregation, including expectant mothers, couples experiencing loss, families longing for children, and healthcare professionals, reflecting the breadth of the Church’s pro-life outreach.
Following the Mass, Bishop Fernandes, together with the concelebrants, offered personal blessings to couples and families who came forward, expressing pastoral care and solidarity. The gathering concluded with fellowship, as the faithful interacted with the clergy and received prayerful encouragement.
The Pro-Life Day observance served as both a spiritual reflection and a renewed call to action, inviting the faithful to echo Mary’s “yes” in their daily lives by safeguarding and witnessing to the sanctity of human life.
