Tuticorin Diocese Calls for Nationwide Closure of Liquor Stores on Good Friday

Tuticorin, November 16, 2024 - The Catholic Diocese of Tuticorin, led by Bishop Stephen Antony Pillai of Tuticorin, has renewed its appeal for the nationwide closure of liquor stores on Good Friday, a day of solemnity and reflection for Christians. This call, recently presented to Tamil Nadu’s Deputy Chief Minister, Hon. Udhayanidhi Stalin, is part of a longstanding effort to promote respect and reverence on this holy day.

The delegation from the diocese, which included Vicar General, Fr. Ravi Balan and Fr. Jeyanthan Degrace, emphasized the historical roots of this initiative. The movement traces back to 1922 when Servant of God Antony Susainather, a noted social reformer, launched the "Madhuvilakku Sodality" (Liquor Prohibition Movement). This campaign has resonated within the community for nearly a century, highlighting the Church's commitment to social welfare and moral integrity.

In recent years, consistent efforts have been made to further this cause. On 3 March 2022, former Tamil Nadu Minority Commission Chairman Mr. Peter Alphonse submitted a formal request to the Tamil Nadu government advocating for the Good Friday liquor store closure. Subsequently, local anti-addiction organizations in Tuticorin renewed this appeal in meetings with the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister on 3 April 2023 and again on 8 February 2024.

Bishop Stephen urged dioceses across India to pursue this cause with passion and unity, encouraging a nationwide movement to honour religious sentiments on Good Friday. The diocese expressed gratitude to government officials for their openness and acknowledged the diocesan administrators, clergy and the anti-addiction committee for their support.
