BANGALORE, 19 March, 2025 – The Archdiocese of Bangalore is hosting a three-day formation programme from 17–19 March 2025 at FISI, Bangalore, equipping young clergy with pastoral skills to support marriages and families. Led by Archbishop Peter Machado and Auxiliary Bishops Satis Kumar and Joseph Susainathan, the initiative aimed to strengthen priests' theological understanding and practical approach to modern challenges in family life.
Addressing Contemporary Issues in Marriage
Discussions by Fr. Merlin Ambrose covered sexual misconduct within Canon Law and the Church’s call for synodality, emphasising the need for priests to embrace a listening approach in their ministry. This was followed by a session on LGBTQ+ issues and marriage, guiding clergy on providing pastoral care with compassion while upholding Church teachings.
Bishop Susainathan emphasised the priest’s role as a lifelong companion to couples, highlighting that marriage is a sacred covenant rather than a legal contract, a key theme explored on the second day of the programme. Fr. Arokiaswamy provided insights into marriage cases, offering pastoral solutions to common conflicts. Priests actively engaged in discussions, sharing real-life challenges and strategies to support couples in their faith journey.
The final day explores the realities of modern marriages, from communication breakdowns to financial struggles. Bishop Satis Kumar provided insights into interfaith and international marriages, outlining both pastoral and canonical considerations. The concluding session will be on handling marriage crises with a faith-centred approach to conflict resolution.
Strengthening the Church’s Mission in Family Life
This initiative renews priests’ commitment—not just to officiating weddings, but to walking alongside couples in their faith and family life. Under Archbishop Machado’s leadership, the Archdiocese of Bangalore remains dedicated to the ongoing formation of clergy, ensuring they serve with wisdom, compassion, and unwavering faith.
