Bhopal, 19th March 2025 – On 18th March 2025, the Christian community in Bhopal gathered in solemn remembrance of Archbishop Eugene D'Souza, the first Archbishop of the Bhopal Archdiocese, on the occasion of his 22nd death anniversary. A special Solemn Holy Mass was held at St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral, Jehangirabad, to honour his enduring legacy.
The Mass was presided over by Archbishop Dr. A.A.S. Durairaj, who was joined by a congregation of clergy members, nuns, and faithful from the community. The service provided a moment of reflection on the late Archbishop Eugene D'Souza's lasting impact and the deep affection in which he is held by the people of Bhopal.
Born on 15th November 1917, Archbishop Eugene D'Souza was appointed as the first Archbishop of Bhopal in 1963 after being transferred from Nagpur. He dedicated over three decades of service to the Archdiocese, guiding it with compassion and commitment until his retirement in 1994. Archbishop D'Souza passed away on 18th March 2003.
During the Mass, Archbishop Durairaj shared heartfelt memories of the late Archbishop, describing him as a revered leader who played a crucial role in uniting the Christian community in Bhopal. Archbishop Eugene's contributions were particularly highlighted, including the establishment of churches, schools, social service centres, and hospitals, which continue to serve as pillars of the community. His dedication to the welfare of the poor and needy remains an integral part of his legacy.
Public Relations Officer, Fr. Alfred D'Souza emphasised that the late Archbishop was widely respected among people of all faiths, attributing this to his spirit of selfless service and his warm, friendly nature. He actively fostered interfaith harmony and mutual understanding, building bridges across diverse communities.
Archbishop Durairaj led a solemn ritual, sprinkling holy water on Archbishop Eugene D'Souza’s grave within the church premises. Fr. P. Soosai, the parish priest, thanked the faithful for honouring a remarkable leader whose legacy continues to inspire the Christian community in Bhopal and beyond.
