Kerala, Feb. 16, 2026: In a rare and poignant act of organ donation, a 10-month-old child who died following a road accident in Kottayam has become the youngest organ donor in the state, offering a lifeline to five recipients.
Announcing the development, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said the infant’s parents consented to donate her organs despite their profound grief, a decision he described as an extraordinary gesture of compassion that has given “new life to five people.”
Hospital authorities confirmed that the child’s liver, two kidneys, heart valve, and eyes were donated. Two of the organs have already been transplanted into critically ill children, whose condition is reported to be improving.
Authorities coordinated a time-sensitive organ retrieval and transport operation after adverse conditions prevented the planned airlift. A special green corridor was established to ensure swift road transport, with police, medical teams, and emergency services working in close coordination.
Expedited procedures were arranged at Kottayam Medical College to complete formalities and enable the organs to be transplanted without delay while ensuring the child’s body was returned promptly to the family.
The Chief Minister praised the parents’ courage and commended the efforts of health workers, police personnel, and emergency responders who facilitated the transplant process. He described the child’s final act as a powerful example of hope emerging from personal tragedy.
The infant was laid to rest with official honours, as tributes poured in across the state for a life that, though brief, has transformed the futures of others.
