St. Augustine's Novena: When You're Feeling Lost, Restless or Far From God

August 19, 2026: What happens when a person spends years searching for happiness, truth and meaning, only to discover that what the heart truly desires is God?

The life of St. Augustine of Hippo is the story of that search. He was brilliant, ambitious and deeply restless. He explored philosophy, pursued worldly pleasures and followed different paths in his search for truth. Yet none of them could give his heart the peace it longed for.

His journey makes the Novena to St. Augustine especially meaningful for anyone who is searching, struggling or longing to come closer to God.

A Heart That Could Not Find Rest

Augustine’s early life was far from the holiness for which he would later become known. Despite his intelligence and achievements, he remained dissatisfied. His mother, St. Monica, prayed persistently for his conversion, never giving up hope.

In Milan, Augustine encountered the preaching of St. Ambrose, whose words helped him see Christianity in a new light. His struggle continued until a decisive moment when he turned to Scripture and finally surrendered himself to God.

He was baptised by St. Ambrose in 387.

His conversion did not simply change his beliefs. It changed the direction of his entire life.

From Restlessness to Rest

Augustine would later become a bishop, theologian and one of the great teachers of the Church. His writings continue to speak to people centuries later because he understood something deeply human: the heart can search for fulfilment in many places and still remain empty.

His famous reflection captures this experience: “Our hearts are restless until they rest in you.”

That restlessness is not unfamiliar to us. We may experience it when we are uncertain about our future, struggling with relationships, carrying personal burdens or simply feeling distant from God.

St. Augustine’s life reminds us that our searching can become a path towards Christ.

Nine Days with St. Augustine

The Novena to St. Augustine of Hippo offers nine days to bring our own intentions before God through the saint’s intercession.

Whether you are praying for yourself, your family, someone who has drifted away from the faith, or a particular intention close to your heart, these nine days can become a time of reflection, prayer and renewed trust in God.

As his feast approaches on August 28, walk with St. Augustine through his journey of searching, struggle, conversion and surrender.

His story reminds us that no matter how long we have wandered, God can still lead us home.

Let St. Augustine’s journey from restlessness to rest inspire your own search for God. Pray the Novena to St. Augustine of Hippo and walk with him towards a deeper encounter with Christ.
