Saint John Eudes lived in seventeenth-century France during a period when the Church urgently needed spiritual renewal.
Born into a farming family in Normandy, John received his education from the Jesuits before entering the Oratory of Jesus and Mary.

He was ordained a priest in 1625 and soon demonstrated remarkable courage by caring for victims of the plague.
His entire priesthood would become a mission of mercy.
At the age of thirty-two, John began preaching parish missions.
He became renowned as a preacher and confessor, eventually preaching more than one hundred missions throughout France.
He wanted people not simply to hear about Christ, but to experience conversion and return to the Sacraments.
His preaching was accompanied by deep compassion for those who were suffering or living on the margins of society.
John was particularly moved by the plight of women trapped in prostitution.
After being challenged by Madeleine Lamy to provide something more practical than words, he helped establish a refuge in Caen in 1641 for women who wished to leave that life and begin again. This work eventually developed into the Order of Our Lady of Charity.
His response was a powerful expression of Christian mercy.
He believed that no person should be abandoned when seeking a new life.
John also recognized that the renewal of the Church required well-formed priests.
In 1643, he founded the Congregation of Jesus and Mary, commonly known as the Eudists, dedicated especially to priestly formation, seminaries, and preaching.
During his lifetime, Eudist seminaries were established in several French cities.
For John, the holiness of the Church depended greatly upon the spiritual formation of her priests.
One of John Eudes' greatest spiritual contributions was his promotion of devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
He celebrated the first liturgical feast of the Heart of Mary in 1648 and established a feast of the Heart of Jesus in 1672.
His writings and preaching helped develop this devotion long before it became widespread throughout the Catholic Church.
Pope Pius XI later recognized him as an important father and promoter of liturgical devotion to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary.
John faced opposition and difficulties, especially concerning his efforts to establish seminaries and his new congregation.
Yet he continued preaching, founding communities, writing, and serving the Church.
He died in Caen on 19 August 1680, after decades of missionary labour. He was beatified in 1909 and canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1925.
Saint John teaches that true evangelization must be accompanied by mercy.
He reminds Christians to care for the vulnerable, support the formation of priests, and proclaim Christ with courage.
His devotion to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary also teaches that Christian holiness begins with allowing God's love to transform the human heart.
Saint John Eudes combined preaching with compassion, spiritual formation with practical charity, and devotion with action.
He did not simply speak about renewal.
He worked for it.
His life challenges Catholics today to bring Christ's mercy to those who are suffering, to pray for holy priests, and to let the love of Jesus and Mary shape every part of life.
Saint John Eudes' message remains clear: proclaim Christ, form hearts for holiness, show mercy to those who are wounded, and place the Heart of Jesus at the centre of Christian life.
