Mizoram Governor V.K. Singh Lauds Catholic Church’s 100 Years of Service, Urges Digital Evangelization

Mizoram, Dec 1, 2025: Expressing deep appreciation for the Catholic Church’s remarkable contributions over the past 100 years, General Vijay Kumar Singh, the 16th Governor of Mizoram, acknowledged the Church’s enduring faith, compassion, and service to the community at the conclusion of the centenary celebrations in Mizoram. An esteemed former Indian Army Chief and seasoned statesman, Governor Singh further encouraged the faithful to explore innovative ways to spread God’s word through modern technology.

A Century of Faith, Service, and Compassion

Honouring the milestone, Governor Singh described the centenary as “not just a celebration, but a sacred moment to remember, reflect, and rejoice in the glory of our Lord.” He highlighted the courageous missionaries who sowed the seeds of the Gospel in Mizoram’s challenging terrain, bringing not only spiritual guidance but also spearheading education, healthcare, and social upliftment.

“The legacy of the Catholic Church is vividly seen in vibrant communities, schools shaping young minds, health institutions serving the poor, and the culture of unity and compassion that Mizoram is admired for,” he remarked, quoting Psalm 126:3: “The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.”

Pillars of Mizoram’s Spiritual and Social Harmony

Governor Singh lauded the Church as a bridge of harmony contributing to the spiritual, moral, and social foundation of Mizoram. He described the Church as a “house of faith” where the Gospel is proclaimed, a “home of love” welcoming all irrespective of tribe or language, a “school of character” nurturing values, and a “sanctuary of service” caring for the sick, weak, and marginalized.

Quoting Jesus’ words from Matthew 5:14, the Governor called the Catholic community “a shining city set on a hill,” whose faith has transformed lives across generations. He praised their deep spirituality, expressed through reverence in worship, dedication to prayer, and daily commitment to living the Gospel.

Love as the Guiding Principle

Referencing St. Paul’s exhortation in 1 Corinthians 16:14 to “do all in love,” Governor Singh highlighted that the Church’s extensive work in education, social service, youth empowerment, and pastoral care is all motivated by love. He celebrated the youth groups, women’s fellowships, and lay organisations inspiring the next generation to walk humbly and courageously in Christ’s footsteps.

He called on the community to bow in gratitude to the missionaries, priests, religious, elders, families, and youth who have preserved and nurtured the faith through challenges. Quoting Jesus again from Matthew 9:37 — “The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few” — he honoured those labourers whose sacrifices built the Church Mizoram now proudly celebrates.

Celebrating Mizoram’s Distinct Christian Identity

Governor Singh stressed Mizoram’s unique spiritual identity, renowned nationwide and globally for its deeply rooted Christian culture, strong commitment to peace, harmonious community life, and rich traditions of choirs and gospel music. He credited the Catholic Church for strengthening these values and called its contributions exemplary in health, education, youth development, and inter-church harmony.

Looking to the Future: Opportunities and Responsibilities

Standing at this historic threshold, Governor Singh urged the Church to focus on strengthening the faith of youth, helping them remain rooted in Christ amid modern challenges. He emphasized the importance of embracing technology for evangelization — using digital platforms, music, media, and creative ministries — to extend the Gospel’s reach.

The Governor also called for continued service to the marginalized and for championing peace and Christian love in society. He encouraged deeper biblical literacy and nurturing every family as a “domestic church” rooted in Scripture and prayer.

Quoting Prophet Jeremiah 29:11, he said, “For I know the plans I have for you, plans to give you future and hope,” assuring that the Catholic Church in Mizoram’s future is bright and filled with God’s grace.

In a lighter moment, the Governor humorously remarked, “You came a bit late, but you’ve done extremely well,” earning thunderous applause from the gathering.

He concluded his address with a heartfelt blessing, quoting St. Francis of Assisi: “Preach the Gospel at all times; when necessary, use words.” He encouraged the faithful that their lives, service, and devotion are powerful expressions of the Gospel itself.

Ending on a spiritual note, Governor Singh invoked the blessing from Numbers 6:24-26, wishing God’s peace and grace upon the community. He extended best wishes for the centenary celebrations and congratulated Bishop Stephen Rotluanga, the first Mizo Bishop, Auxiliary Bishop Joachim Walder, and the priests, religious sisters, and faithful of the Diocese of Aizawl.

Distinguished Guests at the Celebration

The celebration was graced by the Chief Minister of Mizoram, Shri Lalduhoma, who attended the event alongside the Education Minister, Dr. Vanlalthlana, offering their presence and support. Adding to the significance of the occasion was the participation of Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli, who joined the local Church leaders, including Archbishops Victor Lyngdoh of Shillong and Linus Neli of Imphal, as well as Archbishop Dominic Lumon (Emeritus, Imphal). 

The event also brought together Bishops Lumen Monteiro of Agartala, James Thoppil of Kohima, Ferdinand Dkhar of Jowai, Wilbert Marwein of Nongstoin, and Albert Hemrom of Dibrugarh, who collectively marked their solidarity at the celebration, along with NEIRBC Deputy Secretary Fr. Dr. G. P. Amal Raj.
