Thamarassery Diocese Launches Catholic Mental Health Ministry to Address Growing Psychological Needs

Thamarassery, Kerala, May 4, 2026: In a significant pastoral initiative responding to the growing need for mental health care, the Diocese of Thamarassery has launched its diocesan-level Catholic Mental Health Ministry, aimed at supporting individuals experiencing psychological distress and promoting holistic well-being.

The ministry was formally inaugurated by Bishop Remigiose Inchananiyil at Alphonsa Hall in the diocesan centre on Saturday. Addressing the gathering, the bishop drew attention to the alarming rise in suicide rates, describing it as a serious social concern that demands urgent and compassionate intervention. He emphasised that the Church must become a source of hope and healing, reaching out to all people—irrespective of caste or religion—with care, understanding and solidarity.

The newly established ministry functions under the Association of Catholic Mental Health Ministry, an initiative of the CBCI Office for Healthcare. It seeks to integrate spiritual accompaniment with practical mental health support, offering a faith-based yet professionally informed response to psychological challenges.

Among its key objectives are dispelling misconceptions surrounding mental illness, fostering greater public awareness, providing counselling and emotional support, and guiding individuals to appropriate professional care when necessary. The initiative underscores the Church’s commitment to addressing mental health not only as a medical concern but also as a pastoral priority.

A notable feature of the programme is its collaboration with the John Paul Institute of Mental Health, Meringunnu, Kozhikode. The institute will play a crucial role in training volunteers and equipping them with the necessary skills to assist in the ministry’s outreach and counselling efforts.

Fr. Kurian Puramadam, Director of the diocesan Mental Health Ministry, coordinated the launch programme. The event was attended by several clergy, including Fr. Subin Kavalakkattu and Fr. Sai Parankulangara, along with other members of the diocesan community.

The initiative is being widely welcomed as a timely and important step, reinforcing the Diocese of Thamarassery’s commitment to mental health care, pastoral outreach and social responsibility in today’s increasingly complex world.
