Mozambique, June 8, 2026:The Church in Mozambique grieves as a beloved bishop's life is cut short by violence, while the Pope calls for prayer, justice and peace.
The Catholic Church in Mozambique has been left shocked and heartbroken following the tragic death of Fr. Osório Citora Afonso, Bishop of Quelimane and Apostolic Administrator of Beira. He was found dead on 6 June at his episcopal residence in Quelimane after being fatally shot in the chest during what authorities believe was a violent attack.
Known affectionately as “Don Osório”, the bishop was widely respected for his pastoral dedication, humility and unwavering commitment to the people he served. His sudden death has sent waves of grief throughout Mozambique, the wider African Church and the global Catholic community.
The National Criminal Investigation Service has launched an inquiry into the incident, although authorities have yet to release confirmed details regarding the circumstances surrounding the killing or those responsible.
Responding to the tragedy, Pope Leo XIV expressed profound sadness over what he described as a “serious act of violence”. Through a statement released by the Holy See Press Office, the Holy Father said he had learned of the bishop’s death “with sorrow” and united himself in prayer with the people of Mozambique during this painful time.
The Pope prayed that the Lord would grant consolation to the faithful, keep all people in His love and “stay the hand of the violent”. His words reflected not only grief for the loss of a dedicated shepherd but also concern for a nation that continues to face challenges linked to violence and insecurity.
Church leaders across Africa have echoed the Pope’s sentiments, calling for justice, accountability and renewed efforts towards peace and reconciliation.
Bishop Osório was more than a diocesan leader. Between 2017 and 2023, he served as an official of the Dicastery for spreading the good word in the Vatican, helping support the Church’s missionary work across the world.
He remained closely connected to the Vatican and regularly shared updates about the life of the Church in Mozambique, including the hardships faced by communities affected by conflict and instability. His commitment to peace, dialogue and pastoral care earned him deep respect from both Church and civil leaders.
Mozambique’s President, Daniel Francisco Chapo, described his death as an “irreparable loss” for the nation and praised the bishop’s dedication to promoting reconciliation and unity.
The murder of Bishop Osório Citora Afonso is a painful reminder of the human cost of violence. Yet even amid grief, the Church continues to proclaim a message of hope.
Pope Leo XIV’s appeal for prayer and peace serves as a powerful call to reject hatred and seek justice through lawful means. As investigations continue, many Catholics are praying that truth will emerge, those responsible will be held accountable and Bishop Osório’s legacy of faith, service and reconciliation will inspire a more peaceful future for Mozambique.
In remembering his life, the Church is reminded that while violence may silence a voice, it cannot extinguish the values of love, peace and hope that a faithful shepherd leaves behind.
