Kolkata, May 23, 2026: U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio began his first official visit to India with a stop at the Missionaries of Charity headquarters in Kolkata.
The visit on May 23, 2026 drew attention not only for its religious significance, but also for its focus on humanitarian service and social work associated with Mother Teresa’s legacy.
Rubio visited the Mother House and Nirmala Shishu Bhawan, where the Missionaries of Charity continue to work with vulnerable children, the elderly, and people in need. During the visit, he interacted with members of the congregation and observed some of the organization’s ongoing charitable efforts in the city.
While Mother Teresa remains an important figure for Catholics worldwide, her work in Kolkata has also earned recognition across cultural and religious communities for its emphasis on service to the poor and marginalized.
Rubio’s visit reflected that broader appeal. Rather than being viewed only as a religious gesture, the stop highlighted the global visibility of humanitarian institutions that continue to operate in India decades after Mother Teresa’s death.
The visit also follows recent engagement by senior American representatives with the Missionaries of Charity, signaling continued international interest in the organization’s social impact and global outreach.
Speaking after the visit, Rubio acknowledged the lasting influence of Mother Teresa’s work and the role the Missionaries of Charity continue to play today.
“Mother Teresa left a tremendous legacy of compassion and service. I was honored to visit the Missionaries of Charity today and witness their continued work helping those in need,” he said on his social media handle.
The statement gained traction online among religious groups, humanitarian organizations, and supporters of community service initiatives more broadly.
For many people around the world, Kolkata remains closely associated with Mother Teresa’s humanitarian work. The Missionaries of Charity continue to operate homes and outreach programs in several countries, supporting underserved communities through healthcare, childcare, and relief efforts.
Rubio’s Kolkata stop came ahead of meetings in New Delhi and visits to Agra and Jaipur as part of a broader four-day India tour expected to focus on diplomacy, trade, regional security, and Quad cooperation.
While the larger visit centers on strategic discussions, the Kolkata stop offered a different dimension — highlighting how humanitarian work and public service can remain part of international engagement alongside politics and diplomacy.
