Karwar Prison Inmates Celebrate Raksha Bandhan with Diocesan Prison Ministry

Karwar, August 12, 2025 – The Diocesan Prison Ministry Commission, led by Sr. Freshina Lopes and her team, brought warmth, dignity and festive cheer to Karwar Prison on 10 August through a heartfelt Raksha Bandhan celebration. The occasion fostered moments of joy, reflection, and solidarity among the inmates, blending cultural tradition with a message of compassion and hope.


Miss Shyamala Naik, Assistant Jailer, attended as Chief Guest, while Fr. Baptist Gomes presided over the event. Fr. Steevan D’Souza, who served as Master of Ceremonies, extended a warm welcome to all present, setting a gracious and heartfelt tone for the programme.


In his presidential address, Fr. Baptist spoke on the significance of Raksha Bandhan, underscoring its values of protection, unity, and unconditional love. The children of Navajyothi Convent added grace and vibrancy with a prayer dance, followed by an engaging performance that brought smiles to many faces.


The symbolic Rakhi-tying ceremony was a highlight, strengthening bonds of care and fraternity. Sweets were distributed, further enhancing the festive atmosphere. Two inmates contributed to the occasion’s emotional resonance by performing heartfelt songs, offering a glimpse into their personal reflections through music.


Fr. Wilson D’Souza expressed heartfelt gratitude to the guests, organisers, and participants for their role in making the event memorable.


By blending tradition with outreach, the Prison Ministry continues to affirm dignity and hope for those behind bars, serving as a reminder that compassion knows no boundaries.
