Belgaum, August 12, 2025: Fatima Cathedral in Belgaum marked National Youth Sunday and Prison Ministry Sunday with a vibrant gathering that united liturgy, service, and sport. The Eucharist, presided over by Rector Rev. Fr. Thomas Champakara, featured the active participation of the Fatima Cathedral Youth Movement (FCYM) in the liturgy, readings, and choir, with Miss Michelle Swamy on the piano. Members, dressed in blue T-shirts honouring their patroness Our Lady of Fatima, brought visible energy and devotion to the occasion.
In his homily, Fr. Thomas called on the faithful to remain attentive to God’s call, take pride in the faith passed down by ancestors, and live as citizens of Heaven. He also underscored the importance of supporting innocent prisoners and volunteers of the Prison Ministry. Prayers were offered for the health and mission of young people, for those imprisoned while seeking justice, and for the ministry’s volunteers.
The FCYM organised an Altar Servers Sports Day to encourage the talents of the parish’s “altar angels.” Guided by their mentor, Rev. Fr. Alwin Christopher George, participants engaged in football, carrom, and table tennis, fostering friendship and healthy competition.
Rector Fr. Thomas described altar servers as “the future of the Church,” while Bishop Derek Fernandes, Chief Guest at the valedictory, highlighted the role of sports in building both physical and spiritual strength. Guests of Honour included Fr. Alendro Da Costa SJ, Fr. Malcolm Barretto SJ, and Mr. George Manuel.
Trophies, certificates, and participation awards were presented, with heartfelt thanks extended to benefactors and organisers. The event embodied faith in action—moving from the spiritual nourishment of the Eucharist to the joyful energy of sports—forming youth as vibrant witnesses for Christ and devoted servants at His altar.
