New Delhi, 5 June, 2025: India reported 564 new cases of Covid-19 in the past 24 hours, according to data released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Thursday morning. The total number of active cases in the country now stands at 4,866. Seven Covid-related deaths were also reported during this period — three in Maharashtra, two in Delhi, and two in Karnataka. Among the deceased were six elderly individuals with comorbidities and a five-month-old infant suffering from respiratory issues.
The renewed surge in the number of cases follows the emergence of several new variants of Covid-19, including LF.7, XFG, JN.1, and the recently detected NB.1.8.1 subvariant. Since May 22, active infections in India have increased nearly twenty-fold, rising from 257 to 4,866. Kerala continues to be the most affected state, with 1,487 active cases, followed by Delhi (562), West Bengal (538), Maharashtra (526), and Gujarat (508).
In response to the sharp rise in cases, the central government has urged all states and union territories to stay vigilant and ensure that hospitals are well-stocked with essential supplies like oxygen and life-saving medicines.
Health experts warn that symptoms of the current Covid-19 wave—such as fever, fatigue, and respiratory distress—often resemble those of other seasonal viral infections, making early and accurate diagnosis crucial.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has appealed to the public to remain cautious but avoid panic. It has also stressed the continued importance of preventive measures like mask-wearing, hand hygiene, and prompt medical consultation for vulnerable individuals.
While the numbers remain relatively low compared to previous peaks, authorities remain on alert to prevent further spread and to protect high-risk populations.
