Bible and Constitution Raised in Protest Against Unjust Imprisonment of Nuns

Kochi, August 4, 2025 – In a bold display of solidarity, the Kerala Catholic Youth Movement (KCYM) Archdiocese of Verapoly held a protest dharna on August 2, denouncing the unjust imprisonment of Sr. Vandana Francis and Sr. Preethi Mary, who were arrested in Chhattisgarh on charges of human trafficking and religious conversion. While the nuns have since been granted bail, the protest was held to condemn what participants called an unjust and targeted imprisonment.

The protest, symbolically marked by raising the Bible and the preamble of the Constitution, was inaugurated by Fr. Anoop Kalathithara OSJ, Secretary of the Kerala Regional Latin Catholic Bishops' Council (KRLBC) Youth Commission. KCYM Archdiocese of Verapoly President Rajeev Patric presided over the event.

KCYM Latin State President Paul Jose, KCYM Kottapuram Diocese President Jenson Alby, KCYM Latin State Vice President Akshay Alex, and former KCYM Varappuzha Archdiocese President Francis Shenson offered their greetings. KCYM Varappuzha Archdiocese Social-Political Forum Convener Manuel Benny delivered the vote of thanks.

Treasurer Joyson P.J., executive members Ferdinand Francis, Jomon Antony, Amala Rose K.J., and Alan Joseph, President of the Thykudam–Cathedral Region, along with several regional and unit office bearers, were also present in support.
