Buxar Diocese Supports 250 Flood-Affected Families in Jawaniya, Bihar

Bihar, August 4, 2025 – In response to the devastating floods that submerged most houses in Jawaniya village, located on the banks of the river Ganges in Shahpur block, Bhojpur district, the Buxar Diocesan Social Service Society (BUDSSS) extended emergency relief to 250 affected families. The flood was caused by recent heavy rains and a rise in the river water levels, severely impacting several parts of Bihar.

On Sunday, 3rd August, while churches across the Buxar diocese held prayers and Eucharistic adoration for the safeguarding of minority rights in the wake of the arrest and release of the sisters in Durg, Chhattisgarh, the diocese also launched humanitarian relief for flood victims.

With support from Caritas India and contributions from BUDSSS, food relief kits were distributed to the affected families. Each package included rice, flour, lentils, soyabean, sugar, mustard oil, salt, matchboxes, bags, and tarpaulin sheets. Additional supplies to support safe and sanitary living conditions included mats, buckets, detergent, soap, shampoo, sanitary pads, and biscuits. Temporary shelters were set up using tarpaulin sheets, and many families were evacuated to higher ground due to the ongoing rain and high water levels.

Fr. Manoj, Director of BUDSSS, led the relief efforts alongside his team members Mr. Santosh, Mr. Chotu, Mr. Mozam, Mr. Arvind, Mr. Jackson, and Mr. Raju. Their humanitarian service has been widely appreciated. While the Buxar diocese continues its relief outreach, an appeal has also been made to the government to take proactive measures in safeguarding those affected by the floods.
