Singngat, Manipur, August 4 , 2025 – In a significant step toward empowering internally displaced persons (IDPs) and the local community, the Diocesan Social Service Society (DSSS), in collaboration with the Italian Bishops' Conference, organised a two-day training programme on Sustainable Agricultural Practices on 1 and 2 August at St. Joseph’s School, Singngat. The event formed part of a broader COVID-19 crisis initiative aimed at strengthening livelihoods through skill and vocational development.
The programme began with an opening prayer led by Mr. Joseph Tumnou, Church Leader of St. Joseph’s Church in Munpi Village. This was followed by a welcome address from Fr. Mung, Parish Priest and Principal of St. Joseph’s School, who encouraged participants to actively engage in the sessions and apply the knowledge to their own farming practices. He stressed the potential of agriculture to support stable and sustainable family livelihoods and expressed heartfelt thanks to the resource person for accepting the invitation.
Thomas Paupi, the seminar coordinator, introduced the resource person and highlighted his extensive experience in agriculture. He also gave an overview of the programme’s implementation, support mechanisms, and DSSS’s ongoing activities in the region.
Sir Muanna Buansing, from SRP MSRLM & Thrive for Good, Manipur, served as the resource person. He led theoretical sessions on the first day and guided practical training on the second, focusing on sapling planting. Key topics included organic farming methods, innovative agricultural techniques, resource efficiency, and minimising environmental impact in farming.
The seminar drew 70 participants, including youth, elders, and IDPs from various relief camps—demonstrating a shared commitment to sustainable agricultural development. All attendees received pens, notepads, lunch, and refreshments, fostering a comfortable and engaging learning environment.
Interactive sessions encouraged participants to engage with the speaker, share personal experiences, and explore how to incorporate sustainable methods into their own farming or business initiatives.
The event concluded with a Vote of Thanks from Mr. Paupi, who extended his gratitude to Sir Muanna for his valuable insights, DSSS for organising the initiative locally, and the Italian Bishops' Conference for their financial backing. He also thanked the participants for their active involvement throughout the two-day training.
The programme left a sense of renewed purpose among participants, reinforcing agriculture as a viable path towards sustainable livelihoods.
