From Awareness to Action: TNBC–SCST Commission Mobilises Grassroots Voters Ahead of Elections

Chennai, March 28, 2026: The Tamil Nadu Bishops’ Council – SCST Commission has launched a statewide electoral awareness campaign across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, aiming to empower citizens to participate actively and responsibly in the upcoming elections.

As both regions prepare for polls scheduled in April, the initiative seeks to promote informed voting and encourage the election of representatives who uphold democratic values and constitutional rights. The campaign is being carried out through an extensive grassroots network, reaching deep into rural communities.

At the heart of the initiative are over 450 People’s Councils, each comprising 15 to 20 members. These councils are engaging directly with families at the village level, with each group tasked to reach at least 50 households. Through this structured outreach, the campaign is expected to influence nearly 90,000 to 100,000 voters through awareness and education.

To strengthen the mission, a special training session was conducted by Fr. Jerry SJ, who highlighted the responsibility of every citizen in the democratic process. His book on elections has been widely distributed, promoting civic awareness and encouraging participation across communities, irrespective of caste or creed.

In his address, Fr. Jerry emphasised the importance of achieving full voter turnout and reminded participants of Tamil Nadu’s legacy of social justice and self-respect movements. He also provided a balanced reflection on governance in recent years, urging voters to make informed choices based on performance and commitment to public welfare.

A key focus of the campaign is the protection of the secular and democratic fabric of the Constitution. Participants were encouraged to support candidates who uphold national unity, integrity, and inclusive development.

The Commission’s zonal coordinators and field teams have actively engaged in discussions, addressing concerns and planning strategies to motivate communities. In the coming days, regular interactions with People’s Forums will continue, strengthening awareness and encouraging participation at every level.

More than an awareness programme, this initiative represents a movement toward responsible citizenship and collective empowerment. As Tamil Nadu and Puducherry approach the electoral process, the efforts of the Tamil Nadu Bishops’ Council – SCST Commission stand as a strong call for every citizen to exercise their right to vote with awareness, dignity, and purpose.
