Former Supreme Court Judge Justice Kurian Joseph Elected YMCA National President

New Delhi, India, April 25, 2026: Former Supreme Court judge Justice Kurian Joseph has been elected as the National President of the YMCA in India, marking a new phase in his public service after a distinguished judicial career.

Born on 30 November 1953 in Kerala, Justice Kurian Joseph began his legal practice at the Kerala High Court after studying at Government Law College, Ernakulam. He went on to serve as a judge of the Kerala High Court before becoming Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court in 2010.

In March 2013, he was elevated to the Supreme Court of India, where he served until his retirement in November 2018. During his tenure, he earned recognition for his firm stand on judicial transparency, accountability, and the protection of constitutional values. He also played a key role in several important constitutional matters.

Justice Kurian Joseph drew national attention in January 2018 when he joined three other senior judges in publicly raising concerns about the functioning of the judiciary—an unprecedented move aimed at safeguarding institutional integrity.

Throughout his career, he consistently stressed the importance of judicial independence, ethical governance, and a people-centred interpretation of the Constitution. His judgments and public engagements reflected a strong commitment to justice and democratic principles.

Following his retirement, he has remained active in public life, contributing to discussions on law, governance, and social issues, while engaging with civil society initiatives.

His election as YMCA National President is expected to strengthen the organisation’s focus on youth leadership, community service, and inclusive development. Observers note that his experience and moral authority could play a significant role in guiding the YMCA’s mission across the country.

Justice Kurian Joseph’s appointment highlights the continued contribution of former members of the judiciary to national social and community development.
