Kerala Fish Workers Forum Calls for Urgently olicy Reforms to Protect Livelihoods

Kollam, Kerala, April 25, 2026: The Kerala Fish Workers Forum has called on the government to immediately withdraw policies that, it says, are driving the state's fishing community deeper into economic distress.

Meeting at its State Annual Conference in Kollam, the forum voiced grave concern over the mounting challenges confronting fish workers across Kerala, from coastal villages to inland fishing communities. Delegates warned that recent policy decisions, coupled with escalating operational costs, have placed the livelihoods of thousands of families at risk.

A major point of concern was the recent hike in kerosene prices, which the forum described as a severe blow to traditional fishers who depend on the fuel for their daily operations. It demanded an immediate rollback, arguing that the increase has intensified the financial strain on an already vulnerable sector.

The forum emphasised that the crisis extends beyond coastal communities, with inland fishers also grappling with similar economic hardships. Leaders noted that the challenges facing the fishing sector require comprehensive and urgent government intervention.

Inaugurating the conference, Msgr. Baiju Julian, Vicar General of the Diocese of Kollam, underscored the importance of unity and collective action among fish workers. He urged the community to organise and empower itself in order to effectively safeguard its rights and secure a dignified future.

The conference was presided over by State President Joseph Jude, while several community leaders addressed the gathering, highlighting the pressing need for policy reforms and stronger institutional support.

The annual conference also elected a new leadership team for the Kerala Fish Workers Forum. Henry George of Kollam was chosen as State President, and Basil Mookkath of Ernakulam was elected General Secretary. Other office-bearers were also selected to guide the organisation in the coming term.

Reaffirming its commitment to the welfare of fish workers, the forum called for immediate corrective measures and sustained policy support to ensure the protection of livelihoods and the long-term sustainability of Kerala's fishing communities.
