Vasai, Jan 29, 2026: At a time when the Church in India is re-examining how faith is passed on to younger generations, diocesan secretaries of the Commission for Faith Formation from the Western Region gathered in Vasai to reflect and realign their approach to Eucharistic catechesis.
The annual meeting of the CCBI Commission for Faith Formation (Catechetics) was held at the Atma Shodh Renewal Centre, Sandor, from January 27 to 29, on the theme, “Catechesis in preparation for the Sacrament of the Eucharist.”
The meeting served as a platform for collective discernment on how catechesis for First Holy Communion can remain faithful to Church teaching while responding meaningfully to the social, cultural, and pastoral realities of contemporary India. With growing diversity in family structures, learning environments, and faith practices, participants examined the need for renewed methods that speak to today’s children and their families.
A key intellectual anchor of the gathering was provided by Fr. Vijay Machado, Executive Secretary of the CCBI Commission for Faith Formation, who professionally animated the sessions. In his keynote address on “Catechesis in and towards the sacraments of Eucharist in reference to First Holy Communion Catechesis,”
Fr. Machado outlined the present national context of catechetical ministry. He drew attention to emerging challenges and urged catechetical leaders to rethink pedagogical approaches without compromising theological depth or sacramental meaning.
The meeting also situated catechesis within a broader historical and ecclesial framework. Participants were introduced to a “Vasai Catechetical Darshan,” which highlighted the rich Christian heritage of the region, particularly the homeland of St. Gonsalo Garcia. This reflection helped root current pastoral discussions in a living tradition of faith and witness.
Leadership and pastoral direction were underlined through the presence of Bishop Thomas Macwan of Gandhinagar, the Regional Chairman. Addressing gathering and during the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, he stressed the centrality of the Eucharist in Christian life and the responsibility of catechesis to nurture a deeper understanding of its spiritual, communal, and missionary dimensions.
Attention was also given to continuity and accountability within the commission’s work.
Report of the previous annual meeting held in February 2025 was presented Fr. Vincent D’Cruz, Regional Secretary, presented the His facilitation ensured active participation, collaborative dialogue, and a structured progression of discussions throughout the sessions.
One of the most engaging components of the meeting was the series of diocesan presentations on First Communion catechesis. Representatives from different dioceses shared their local practices, pedagogical tools, and pastoral experiences. These exchanges highlighted both common concerns and contextual variations, offering valuable insights into how catechesis is being lived out on the ground.
Building on these shared experiences, participants entered into focused group discussions on the possibility of developing an Ecclesiastical Province-level Common Programme for First Holy Communion catechesis. The proposal aims to bring greater coherence and unity in sacramental preparation across the Western Region, while still allowing flexibility for local adaptation.
The deliberations closed with appreciation for the local coordination team that ensured the smooth conduct of the meeting, alongside acknowledgment of the collective efforts behind its organisation. Ten representatives participated in the discussions, shaping the process through shared reflection, active collaboration, and a clear vision for the future of Eucharistic catechesis in the region.
As the Church continues to engage new generations in faith formation, the Vasai meeting stood as a significant step toward strengthening Eucharistic catechesis—placing the sacrament not merely as a rite of passage, but as a formative encounter shaping lifelong Christian discipleship.
