Mysuru, Jan 29, 2026:
In an effort to deepen parish involvement and strengthen grassroots faith life, the Diocese of Mysore conducted an Orientation Programme on Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs) at the Catholic Centre, Mysuru.
The programme brought together religious superiors, priests, sisters, and parish ministry members, and was held in line with the diocesan pastoral vision that places BECs at the heart of all parish and diocesan commissions.
Addressing the gathering, Bishop Francis Serrao of Mysore underscored the central role of BECs in building a participatory and mission-oriented Church. He noted that when BECs function actively, parish commissions naturally become vibrant, enabling the Church to reach families, neighbourhoods, and everyday life more effectively. The Bishop stressed that BECs are not optional structures, but a foundational framework for pastoral outreach.
The sessions opened with reflections on the need for Basic Ecclesial Communities and their distinctive spirituality, highlighting faith-sharing, community-building, and missionary engagement. Participants also explored the role of priests in nurturing BECs, with emphasis on pastoral leadership, collaboration, and accompaniment.
Fr. Joachim Fernandes, the resource person for the programme, shared insights drawn from pastoral experience, helping participants rediscover the vision, spirituality, and practical approaches essential for sustaining active BECs.
The orientation concluded with a planning session in which participants discussed concrete steps to strengthen BECs within their respective parishes.
Fr. Arul Selva Kumar, Coordinator of Diocesan Commissions, described the initiative as an important step toward realizing the Bishop’s vision of a Church rooted in the Word of God, committed to service, and animated by dynamic, faith-filled communities.
