Madrid, June 7, 2026: An estimated two million Catholics gathered at Madrid’s Plaza de Lima on Saturday to welcome Pope Leo XIV in one of Spain’s largest youth gatherings in recent decades. The event witnessed moments of prayer, music and reflection, highlighting a renewed search for faith among young people.
Pilgrims from schools, universities and parishes across Spain attended the gathering, including more than 600 young people accompanied by the Brothers and Sisters of the Sacred Hearts Congregation.
During an interactive session, young representatives from various parishes asked the Pope questions on faith, vocation, truth and the challenges faced by today’s generation.
Speaking about his role models, Pope Leo said he admired “those who are materially poor but rich in faith.” He encouraged young people to recognise God in their daily lives by embracing silence and listening.
“Develop the ability to be silent. In silence we can discern the Word of God,” the Pope said.
Urging young people to seek truth, the Pontiff reminded them that “God is truth” and encouraged them to approach Him through sincere prayer.
“Do not be afraid to express what you feel. He listens and will respond,” he said.
Addressing the importance of sharing faith with others, Pope Leo highlighted the power of personal witness and encouraged young people to reflect the Gospel through their actions.
“Share your testimony through the consistency of your life, especially in moments of weariness,” he said, adding that faith grows stronger when lived within a community.
Responding to questions on vocation and discipleship in the modern world, the Pope challenged the belief that faith belongs to the past.
“Jesus' disciples are contemporaries but never prisoners of time. We are free in Christ. We are free from trends because we are disciples of the truth,” he said.
He invited young Catholics to actively transform society through faith, wisdom and service.
“Be the spark of a new humanity. Be human—men and women of flesh and blood, not mere appearances, but trustworthy faces. Seek justice,” Pope Leo urged.
Calling young people to become missionaries of the Gospel, the Pope reminded them of their ability to bring change through love.
“You can change history,” he said. “Do so with love.”
The gathering concluded with prayer and Eucharistic adoration as thousands remained in silent reflection.
María Bernard, a member of the Sacred Hearts youth movement, described the gathering as a sign of growing faith among European youth.
“Faith in Europe is returning,” she said, adding that many young people are searching for silence, meaning and a deeper relationship with God.
