Feast of Our Lady of Perpetual Help: A Mother Who Never Fails Her Children

June 27, 2026: For generations, Catholics around the world have turned to Our Lady of Perpetual Help with a simple but powerful belief: that Mary never abandons her children. Celebrated on June 27, the feast of Our Lady of Perpetual Help honors one of the most beloved Marian devotions in the Church, inspiring millions to seek comfort, strength, and hope through her intercession.

At the heart of this devotion is a centuries-old Byzantine icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary holding the Child Jesus. In the image, Jesus looks frightened as He sees the instruments of His future Passion carried by the Archangels Michael and Gabriel. Mary gently embraces Him, symbolising her loving protection and constant care for all who seek her help.

The icon, now enshrined in the Church of St. Alphonsus in Rome, was entrusted to the Redemptorists by Pope Pius IX in 1866 with the instruction to “make her known throughout the world.” Since then, devotion to Our Lady of Perpetual Help has spread across continents, especially through the popular Wednesday novena attended by millions of faithful every year.

For many believers, this devotion is deeply personal. People gather before her image carrying prayers for healing, family struggles, financial burdens, and emotional pain. Countless faithful continue to testify to receiving peace, strength, and comfort through Mary’s intercession.

The title “Perpetual Help” reflects the Church’s belief that Mary continually cares for her children and leads them closer to Jesus. In a world filled with anxiety and uncertainty, her feast serves as a reminder that no one walks alone in their struggles.

As Catholics celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Perpetual Help today, churches around the world echo with a prayer that has remained alive for generations:

“Mother of Perpetual Help, pray for us.”
