Bishop Francis Serrao Calls for Human-Centred Development at ODP Reflection Session

Mysore, June 27, 2026: Development initiatives must focus on transforming lives and upholding human dignity rather than merely implementing projects, Bishop Francis Serrao of Mysore said during a reflection session for the staff of the Organisation for the Development of People (ODP), Mysore.

Addressing the ODP family, Bishop Francis Serrao, who also serves as President of ODP, urged staff members to remain close to the poor and marginalised and to carry out their mission with humility, dedication and compassion. Drawing on his pastoral experience and grassroots engagement, he emphasised that development work is fundamentally a ministry of service rooted in concern for people.

The Bishop stressed that every programme and initiative should place the human person at its centre by promoting empowerment, participation and sustainable growth. He encouraged staff to listen attentively to communities, respect their dignity and work alongside them in building a more just and equitable society.

Describing social development as a vocation inspired by Gospel values, Bishop Serrao called on participants to view their work not merely as a profession but as a commitment to love, service and solidarity.

Fr. Tenny Kurian, Director of ODP, also addressed the gathering and highlighted the importance of transparency, accountability and ethical governance in development initiatives. He said credibility and integrity remain the foundations of effective organisations and urged staff members to uphold these principles in all their programmes and interactions.

Encouraging the ODP team to strive for excellence, Fr. Kurian called on participants to remain faithful to the organisation’s vision and mission while serving society with professionalism and commitment.

Speaking on behalf of the ODP family, Fr. John Fernandis, Assistant Director of ODP, expressed gratitude to Bishop Serrao for sharing his vision and experiences in social transformation. He also thanked Fr. Kurian for his leadership in strengthening transparency and good governance within the organisation.

The reflection session concluded with participants reaffirming their commitment to serving society with compassion, integrity and hope. The gathering also renewed ODP’s resolve to promote sustainable development and build empowered communities through service rooted in faith, justice and human dignity.
