Madrid, June 07, 2026: Pope Leo XIV began his six-day Apostolic Journey to Spain with a call for unity, human dignity, and a renewed commitment to the Gospel, urging young people to become “a spark of a new humanity” in a world marked by division and conflict.
Thousands gathered on the streets of Madrid to welcome the Pope as he arrived in the Spanish capital. His first official engagement was at the Royal Palace of Madrid, where he was received by King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, and their daughters. Reflecting on Spain’s long Catholic tradition, the Pope urged society to move beyond division and “set aside polarising narratives” by recognising the complexity of history and social realities.
Addressing concerns over increasing polarisation and threats to human rights, Pope Leo called for people committed to truth, justice, and peace, stressing the need to build bridges rather than deepen divisions.
The Pope later visited Cedia 24 Horas, a social project run by Caritas Madrid, where he highlighted the importance of protecting human dignity and caring for the vulnerable. He reminded volunteers that service should go beyond material assistance and become a genuine personal encounter.
Quoting Pope Francis, he said that “alms are not the same as philanthropy,” emphasising the need to look into the eyes of those being served and recognise their dignity. “In this home, no one remains alone,” he said.
The day concluded with a prayer vigil at Plaza de Lima, where Pope Leo met thousands of young people from Madrid. Responding to their questions, he encouraged them to listen to God’s voice through moments of silence and reflection, reminding them that “ideologies pass away, while truth remains.”
Speaking about vocation, the Pope urged young Catholics not to be afraid of considering the priesthood, religious life, or other forms of service in the Church.
He also reminded the youth that faith is a journey lived together. “No one believes in Jesus alone,” he said, encouraging them to witness the Gospel amid violence, indifference, and conformity.
The gathering ended with Eucharistic Adoration and Benediction. In his final message, Pope Leo invited young people to embrace authenticity, charity, and service.
“This, dear young people, is the virtue that changes history more than any other. You can change history. Do it through love,” the Pope said.
