Amravati, Maharashtra, June 28, 2026: Reaffirming the vital role of catechists in the Church's mission of evangelisation, the Diocese of Amravati organised a one-day formation and training programme for catechists on June 27 at the Jeevan Vikas Socio-Pastoral Centre in Paratwada. The programme, held under the leadership of Bishop Malcolm Sequeira, focused on strengthening the spiritual, pastoral and missionary commitment of catechists serving across the diocese.
Coordinated by Diocesan Pastoral Director Fr. Crisler Perumbully, the gathering brought together catechists from various parishes for prayer, reflection and formation, offering them an opportunity to renew their vocation as proclaimers of the Gospel.
Opening the programme, Fr. Perumbully led a session on liturgical animation, describing the liturgy as the "source and summit" of Christian life. He emphasised the indispensable role of catechists in fostering active participation in the Church's liturgical celebrations and helping the faithful encounter Christ through the sacraments.
The second session was conducted by Fr. Vishal Viegas, OFM Cap., who addressed the themes of faith sharing and record keeping. Encouraging catechists to witness to their faith through personal example, he also underscored the importance of maintaining systematic parish records to ensure continuity, accountability and the effective growth of catechetical ministry.
An interactive sharing session enabled participants to reflect on their pastoral experiences, discussing both the joys and challenges of their ministry. The exchange fostered mutual support and strengthened the sense of communion among catechists serving in different parts of the diocese.
The highlight of the programme was Bishop Malcolm Sequeira's address on the vocation and responsibilities of catechists. He reminded participants that catechists are called not merely to impart religious instruction but to be authentic witnesses of the Gospel and trusted collaborators in the Church's evangelising mission.
The bishop urged them to remain rooted in prayer, steadfast in faith and committed to proclaiming the Good News through lives of integrity and Christian witness.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks to the resource persons, organisers and participants for their active involvement. Through the initiative, the Diocese of Amravati reaffirmed its commitment to the ongoing formation of catechists, recognising their indispensable contribution to nurturing the faith and building vibrant Christian communities.
