Church Leaders in North Bengal Promote Unity Through Neighbourhood Human Community Orientation

Jalpaiguri, West Bengal, March 28, 2026: In a concerted effort to strengthen grassroots pastoral outreach and foster interfaith harmony, a one-day Neighbourhood Human Community Orientation was held on March 27 at the Bishop’s House in Jalpaiguri. The programme brought together clergy and religious from multiple dioceses across North Bengal, underscoring the Church’s commitment to building inclusive and compassionate communities.

The orientation commenced with a solemn Bible procession, followed by an opening prayer led by Fr. Navin Tete. Bishop Fabian Toppo extended a warm welcome to the gathering, setting the tone for a day of reflection and collaboration.

A total of 48 priests and religious representing the dioceses of Asansol, Krishnagar, Raiganj, Bagdogra, Darjeeling, and Jalpaiguri participated in the programme.

The resource team—Fr. I.P. Sarto, Fr. Felix Pinto, and Sr. Christin H.C.—facilitated a series of sessions that combined pastoral insights with practical applications. Participants described the orientation as both enriching and transformative, particularly appreciating the in-depth engagement with the Preamble of the Indian Constitution. The reflections highlighted the harmony between constitutional values and Gospel teachings, encouraging participants to embody these principles in their ministry and daily lives.

Speakers stressed the urgent need for grassroots engagement, calling on Church personnel to build meaningful relationships across religious boundaries and to act as agents of peace and reconciliation in society.

The event was graced by several bishops, including Bishop Fulgence A. Tigga, Bishop Paul Simick, Bishop Stephen Lepcha, along with Bishop Toppo.

The programme concluded with a final blessing from Bishop Toppo, sending participants forth with a renewed sense of mission to promote unity, harmony, and Gospel values in an increasingly diverse and pluralistic society.
